The Prada Jacket Understands The Word Blouson

Prada jackets show how one blouson shape changes in chino, poplin, denim, leather and Re-Nylon, alongside tailored pieces with a technical edge.

Five blousons in five materials is a deliberate exercise

Running one cut through wildly different cloths is how a house demonstrates that the pattern is the design. The prada jacket lineup includes the Chino Blouson Jacket, the Poplin Blouson Jacket, the Cropped Denim Blouson Jacket and the Lightweight Re-Nylon Blouson Jacket, which is four readings of the same gathered-waist shape. Each fabric changes how the gathering behaves, with poplin collapsing softly and chino holding structure. Re-Nylon does something different again, staying crisp without weight. Seeing the same jacket in four cloths is the clearest possible lesson in why fabric choice is a design decision rather than a finish.

The tailored and outerwear pieces are the other half

Three jackets here are not blousons and they cover the more formal end. The Single-Breasted Melange Hopsack Jacket is a proper tailored jacket, hopsack being an open-weave wool that breathes better than most suiting. The Double-Breasted Technical Taffeta Jacket takes a tailoring silhouette and executes it in a technical fabric, which is the most characteristic Prada move in the entire list. The Quilted Wool Caban Jacket uses the caban shape, a short naval coat, and the Cropped Nappa Leather Jacket is the softest and most conventional luxury piece in the group. Putting hopsack tailoring next to technical taffeta in one range is the house showing both of its registers at once.

Our honest take

This is a well-constructed range with an unusually clear internal logic, and knowing whether you want a blouson or a tailored jacket resolves most of the decision immediately. The Re-Nylon blouson is the most useful piece here because it packs, resists weather and still reads as designed. The technical taffeta double-breasted is the most interesting object and the most specific taste. The cropped nappa leather is the one that will last longest and date least. The hopsack tailored jacket is the most versatile if you actually need a jacket rather than outerwear. If you take one thing away, it is that the blouson shape is what this house does best in outerwear, and the Re-Nylon version is the most complete expression of it.
