The Puffer Vest Is Still the Easiest Fall Layer

The Puffer Vest Is Still the Easiest Fall Layer

The puffer vest started as outdoor gear and became the layer everyone owns. These are 24 down and quilted puffer vests, from heritage outdoor names to dressier down and cropped athletic cuts, with how I would wear each one this fall.

Where the puffer vest came from

The quilted down layer has an American origin story. Eddie Bauer made the Skyliner, a quilted goose down jacket, in 1936 and patented the design in 1940. A puffer vest is that idea with the sleeves taken off, which is exactly why it works: your core stays warm and your arms stay free.

The heritage outdoor names are where I start. The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse vest is the boxy, glossy one, from a Nuptse line that goes back to 1992 and is filled with 700-fill goose down. The Aconagua and the Hydrenalite Down A-Line are its quieter cousins. Patagonia's Sisar Down Vest is the one you see on trails and office floors alike, Barbour's Otterburn is the flatter quilted version that sits under a waxed jacket, Levi's Quilted Puffer Vest is the easy everyday one, and Canada Goose's Grandview and Aethera are the warmest of the group. Canada Goose's Fallon sits with them, Burberry's Devonside is a diamond-quilted gilet, and Rains' Banja and Malbon's Maya are the flatter quilted options to wear under a jacket.

My test is the armhole. Put the vest on over the thickest sweater you plan to wear with it and lift both arms. If the armhole pulls, size up or choose a flatter quilt.

What I would skip: a very glossy shell for the office, where a matte nylon reads calmer.

Down that goes to dinner

Moncler was founded in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble, and made its first down jackets in 1954. That mountain start is still the reason a good down vest from that world feels engineered rather than decorative.

The Moncler Ghany and Liane are the two here, glossy and close to the body. Max Mara's Greengo is the hooded one with a sporty edge, Herno's velvet down vest is the one I would wear to dinner, and Mackage's Hoshi adds a hood and a sharper line. Anatomie's Vela comes in a soft gold, Halfdays' Louise borrows from ski wear, and Varley's Colwyn is the most relaxed of the group. Moncler's Otis, Lempa, Gumiane and Faucille vests round out the grid, from ripstop to iridescent.

The pairing that always works is a fine turtleneck, straight trousers and a loafer, so the vest is the only puffy thing in the outfit.

What I would skip: a long tailored coat on top. A down vest wants to be the outer layer.

Cropped, long and made to move

The other half of the puffer vest story is athletic. Brands that started in yoga studios and running shops now make vests you can wear to a class and then to lunch, and the cut is the thing to watch.

lululemon's Wunder Puff Cropped Vest and Alo's Cropped Gold Rush Puffer Vest stop at the waist, which works best with high-rise leggings or a wide trouser. Beyond Yoga's Warm-Up vest is the cropped white one, Vuori's Alta 650 Fill Power Down Vest is the cleanest fit, and Thread & Supply's Issey Puffer Vest comes in a warm caramel I keep coming back to. Gallery's quilted vest has a removable hood, and Zella's Long Hooded Puffer Vest and FP Movement's On The Move Packable Vest run long, so they cover more of you on cold mornings.

My test for these is to sit down. If the vest rides up at the back or bunches at the stomach, it is going to annoy you every day.

What I would skip: a long vest over a long coat. Pick one length and let it lead.

How I would choose one

Start with where you will wear it. For walks, errands and weekends, a heritage vest from The North Face, Patagonia or Levi's does everything you need. For the office or a dinner, a velvet or matte down vest from Herno, Moncler or Max Mara looks more considered. For classes and long days on your feet, a cropped or long athletic vest is the most comfortable.

Whichever you choose, check the fill and the armhole before the colour. A good puffer vest should feel light in the hand and warm on the body, and it should sit over a sweater without pulling. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Hunter Boots for Women and Long Puffer Coats.
