Tropic of C

Tropic of C

Candice Swanepoel, a longtime Victoria's Secret Angel, launched Tropic of C in February 2018 with co-founder Daniela Manfredi, a former Victoria's Secret creative director, while on a break from modeling during her first pregnancy. The label built its name on the signature one-piece known as The C, cut from recycled and regenerated nylon and positioned as a sustainability-minded swim brand from its first collection onward.

Swim

Swim is the entire reason Tropic of C exists, built around The C, the signature one-piece Swanepoel launched with in 2018 while Victoria's Secret had temporarily paused its own swim category. She has said the idea traces back to childhood, sewing bikinis from her mother's leftover fabric in South Africa. The recycled and regenerated nylon used across this grid was part of the brand's approach from day one, not a later addition.

Tops and shirting

Tops mark how far Tropic of C has moved past a pure swim label since 2018, adding cover-ups and knitwear as the brand built out a broader beach-lifestyle range. The earth-tone, sun-faded palette here draws on the Brazilian coastal influence Swanepoel and co-founder Daniela Manfredi have leaned on since the label's earliest resort collections. It is a more casual read on the brand than the swimsuits that made its name.

More from the collection

Whatever else collects here reflects a brand that started as direct-to-consumer with a deliberately small wholesale footprint, Goop and Moda Operandi among its first retail partners back in 2018. Categories keep expanding, most recently into a Victoria's Secret collaboration that closes a loop back to Swanepoel's own modeling years. It is worth a look for anyone tracking how far past swim this label has actually grown.

Our honest take

Tropic of C's founding story checks out cleanly, a model who spent years as one of Victoria's Secret's most recognizable faces building a swim label around sustainable materials rather than just her own name recognition. The swim category is still where the brand is strongest and most convincing. The lifestyle extensions are fine, but they are clearly riding on the suits.
