When High Fashion Meets High Performance

When High Fashion Meets High Performance

Collaboration sneakers, technical coats and the designers borrowing from sport

When high fashion meets high performance: Loewe x On, Zendaya, FKA twigs and designer sport collaborations from Net-A-Porter, Mytheresa and SSENSE.

When high fashion meets high performance

The line between a designer label and a technical one has almost disappeared. Loewe designs running shoes with On, FKA twigs and Zendaya have made their own versions and fashion houses now make pieces that could be worn to train. This edit follows those collaborations and the designer pieces that sit comfortably beside them.

Start with On. Loewe's Cloudtilt, Zendaya's Cloudnova Moon Mary Jane, the Post Archive Faction Cloudbloom Next and FKA twigs' Cloudmonster 3 Mule show how far running design has come, and the FKA twigs Club Collective T-shirt, Post Archive Faction's Cloudsoma and Zero jacket and the Cloud X 5 fill out the group.

Designer sportswear and technical fashion looks

Designers who design for sport

Sport has become a fashion subject. Houses and young labels now work with athletic brands, and the results are among the most interesting shoes and accessories of the season.

Jil Sander's Speedcat with Puma, JW Anderson's Equipe with Diadora and two Veja collaborations, the Magliano Panenka and Baserange Jitsu Nolyn, are the sneakers to know. Skims x Nike leggings, Rick Owens and Moncler's drawstring sweatpants, Diesel's Melissa Melflex sneakers and Entire Studios' adidas gym duffle show the same idea in clothing and bags.

Technical outerwear at runway level

Winter coats have always been a place where performance and fashion overlap. Down fill, waterproof shells and shearling trims give a coat its purpose, and the best designers make that purpose look good.

Max Mara's belted hooded puffer, Moncler's technical down coat, Stone Island's micro twill coat and Moncler Grenoble's plush down ski jacket are the technical pieces. Yves Salomon's shearling-trimmed shell jacket and long down coat, Canada Goose's Tayen fleece jacket and Auralee's wool-tweed blouson give the idea a softer, more tailored edge.

Accessories with a technical edge

Small accessories are the easiest way to wear this idea. A cap, a pair of sunglasses or a pair of fingerless gloves lets you borrow from sport without changing your whole outfit.

Loewe's Paula's Ibiza baseball cap, Khaite's 1963C and 1974C sunglasses made with Oliver Peoples, Jacques Marie Mage's Erin Wasson The Sud and Jil Sander's Edition 1 aviators for Oliver Peoples are the eyewear. Auralee's Tekla arm warmers, Johnstons of Elgin's fingerless gloves and Entire Studios' adidas gym clutch complete the set.

The after-hours wardrobe

Once the performance pieces are covered, the rest of the wardrobe can borrow their ease. Wide trousers, jersey and nylon in quiet colours keep the sporty feeling going into the evening.

Sacai's Levi's jeans and its wool knit pullover, R13's tweed pants and cuffed X-Boyfriend jeans and Cecilie Bahnsen's North Face Carla trousers are the tailored-meets-technical pieces. Courrèges' vinyl miniskirt, AMI's belted miniskirt and Sporty & Rich's Yankees track jacket are lighter, more playful options.

Where to begin

Start with one collaboration shoe, since that is where the idea is easiest to see, then add a technical coat. The rest of the edit will follow.
