Which La Roche-Posay Cleanser Is Best for Your Skin?

Which La Roche-Posay Cleanser Is Best for Your Skin?

Which La Roche-Posay cleanser is best? Toleriane is for dry or sensitive skin, Effaclar for oily or acne-prone skin. Here is how every face wash compares.

Which La Roche-Posay cleanser is best for your skin

The best La Roche-Posay cleanser depends on your skin. Toleriane Hydrating Gentle is for normal to dry skin, Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash is for normal to oily skin, and Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser is for acne-prone skin. Mela B3 is the one for dark spots. I would choose by what your skin is doing this month, then stay with it for a while.

The legend goes that a horse with eczema was cured at a spring in a small French town, and the knight who owned it was Bertrand du Guesclin, the Breton soldier who became constable of France in 1370 and died in 1380. It is a legend, not a medical record. But it is the reason a town called La Roche-Posay became known for its water, and in 1905 a dermatology-focused Thermal Centre opened there.

Pharmacist René Levayer formally founded the lab in 1975 and built formulas around that same thermal water. L'Oréal bought the brand in 1989 and placed it in its dermatology group alongside Vichy, CeraVe and SkinCeuticals. What I like about the range is how honestly it splits. Choosing a La Roche-Posay cleanser means choosing a side: the ceramide and niacinamide calm of Toleriane, or the medicated strength of Effaclar. I sorted the whole brand by skin state in another edit.

The trick is to start by asking whether your skin is upset or breaking out. Toleriane Hydrating Gentle is the one for normal to dry skin, Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash suits normal to oily skin, and the Milky Cleanser is the non-foaming pick for dry, sensitive skin. Then the Effaclar side. The Medicated Gel Cleanser is the brand's salicylic acid acne wash, with 2% salicylic acid and lipo-hydroxy acid. The Purifying Foaming Gel is the oily-skin foaming wash, and the Acne Face Wash with 4% Benzoyl Peroxide is the strongest active on this shelf. Mela B3 is the odd one out, a cleanser made for dark spots.

Every La Roche-Posay face cleanser, side by side

This is the shelf by skin type, brand-stated key ingredients and texture.

Toleriane Hydrating Gentle. For normal to dry, sensitive skin. The brand lists ceramide-3, niacinamide, glycerin and thermal water, in a non-foaming cream.

Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash. For normal to oily, sensitive skin. Same key ingredients as the Hydrating one, in a foam.

Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Cleanser. For dry, sensitive, allergy-prone skin. The brand says it has only 9 ingredients, with glycerin and thermal spring water up front, in a non-foaming milk.

Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser. For acne-prone skin. The brand lists 2% salicylic acid, lipo-hydroxy acid and glycerin, in a foaming gel.

Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel. For oily skin. The brand's key ingredients are zinc pidolate and thermal spring water, in a foaming gel.

Effaclar Acne Face Wash with 4% Benzoyl Peroxide. For acne-prone, oily skin. The brand lists 4% benzoyl peroxide and 0.1% lipo-hydroxy acid. It does not state a texture.

Mela B3 Dark Spot Face Cleanser. For all skin types, aimed at dark spots. The brand lists Melasyl and niacinamide, in a gel.

La Roche-Posay cleanser chart matching each face wash to a skin type: Normal to dry, sensitive skin: Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, a non-foaming cream with ceramide-3 and niacinamide. Normal to oily, sensitive skin: Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash, the same ingredients in a foam. Dry, allergy-prone skin: Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Cleanser, 9 ingredients, non-foaming. Acne-prone skin: Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser, 2% salicylic acid plus lipo-hydroxy acid. Oily skin: Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel, with zinc pidolate. Stubborn breakouts on oily skin: Effaclar Acne Face Wash, 4% benzoyl peroxide. Dark spots: Mela B3 cleanser, Melasyl and niacinamide.

More La Roche-Posay: cleansers, a kit, a mask and a mist

Here is how I would choose from this grid: decide whether you want a cleanser that does one thing or a bundle that starts a routine. Both are fine and they are not the same.

For makeup, the Toleriane Micellar Cleansing Water is a rinse-free way to remove it, and it works nicely as a first cleanse. For skin that runs dry and reactive, Lipikar AP+ has three formats: the Gentle Foaming Cleansing Oil, the Wash AP+ for face and body, and the Lipikar AP+ Face Wash. All three are made for eczema-prone skin, so they are worth trying if regular cleansers leave you tight. I gave the cleansing oil its own edit, a softer shower with Lipikar.

The Vitamin C Brightening Facial Cleanser is the one to try if your skin is looking dull and you want a brightening step at the sink. If you want to build on it, I pulled together the La Roche-Posay vitamin C serum and the SPF to wear over it. The Effaclar Daily Acne Essentials Kit is the neat choice for someone who wants the routine chosen for them. If you land on the Effaclar side, here is which Effaclar step you need and what to pair it with.

Then the extras. The Thermal Spring Water is a mist for a moment of calm in the middle of the day, and the Effaclar Clarifying Clay Face Mask is for an oily-skin evening.

What I would skip: the clay mask the day after a strong acne treatment. Your skin has done enough.

The rest of a La Roche-Posay routine

A cleanser is only the first move. Start with what you want the rest of the routine to do, and add one step at a time.

Hydration first. The Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum goes on before the Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, which leans on niacinamide. I wrote about the Toleriane Double Repair as an everyday reset too. For skin that is irritated or raw, the Cicaplast Balm B5 is a multi-purpose cream and the Cicaplast Gel B5 is the lighter repair gel. I would keep one of the two in a bathroom drawer for any time skin misbehaves.

The Toleriane Rosaliac Anti-Redness Moisturizer is for reactive, flushed skin and is the one I would try if you blush easily. Then the two spot correctors. The Effaclar Duo+M Acne Treatment has salicylic acid for blemishes, and the Mela B3 Serum is for dark marks left behind afterward. The dark spot routine around the serum is its own edit.

Finish with the Anthelios UV Air Daily Supercharged Serum Sunscreen SPF 50, which goes on last in the morning. If you like a little tint, here are the mineral fluids to try. Nothing else in this grid will do more for your skin over the years.

A pairing I like: the Duo+M at night on the spot, the Mela B3 Serum on the mark once it heals and the sunscreen the next morning.

What I would skip: the Duo+M and a retinoid on the same night.

Gentle, calming cleansers from other brands

A habit worth borrowing: when your skin is unhappy, change one thing. Swap in a gentler wash before you change the serums, the moisturizer and the sunscreen all at once.

This group is exactly for that swap. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser and Skinfix's barrier+ Ceramide + Ectoin Hydrating Gentle Gel Cleanser both aim for ceramide-forward calm. First Aid Beauty's Ultra Gentle Pure Skin Cream-to-Foam Cleanser and fresh's Soy Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser are the softer, lower-foam picks.

Dermalogica's Ultracalming Cleanser and Kate Somerville's DeliKate Soothing Cleanser are made for skin that flares easily, and I would try one of them in winter when everything seems to sting. LANEIGE's Water Bank Gentle Gel Cleanser adds hyaluronic acid for hydration, and Sofie Pavitt Face's Clean Clean Gentle Cleanser is a smaller esthetician-built label if you like discovering something new.

Glow Recipe's Avocado Ceramide cleanser, AESTURA's ATOBARRIER365 foam, Dr. Jart+'s Cicapair foam and Tower 28's SOS gel are the ones I would add for barrier-first calm. INNBEAUTY PROJECT's Extreme Cleanse milky cleanser and Glossier's Milky Jelly are easy daily washes, and Kate Somerville's Goat Milk and The Ordinary's Glycolipid are the picks for dry skin.

These sit well next to a Toleriane, too. Use one in the morning when skin needs a quick rinse, and keep the Toleriane or Effaclar for the evening. I also gathered gels, milks and balms for sensitive skin if you want more to choose from.

What I would skip: switching cleansers every week. A wash needs about a month to judge, and skin is not a fast reader.

La Roche-Posay cleansers, answered

What La Roche-Posay cleanser should I use? Start with your skin type. The brand points normal to dry skin to Toleriane Hydrating Gentle, normal to oily skin to Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash, and acne-prone skin to Effaclar Medicated. It also calls the Milky Cleanser its pick for sensitive, allergy-prone skin.

What is the difference between La Roche-Posay cleansers? The Toleriane cleansers are labeled for sensitive skin, and the Hydrating and Foaming ones both list ceramide-3 and niacinamide. The Effaclar cleansers are for oily or acne-prone skin and use salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or zinc pidolate. Texture splits too: Hydrating and Milky are non-foaming, the rest foam.

Effaclar or Toleriane cleanser? Pick Toleriane if your skin is dry, sensitive or easily upset. Pick Effaclar if oil or breakouts are the problem. The brand says Effaclar Medicated has 2% salicylic acid and the Dual Action wash has 4% benzoyl peroxide, so ask a dermatologist if you are unsure.

Is La Roche-Posay cleanser good for acne? The brand names Effaclar Medicated Acne Face Wash as its best face wash for acne and says it helps clear breakouts. Its 4% benzoyl peroxide wash says to keep it away from hair and dyed fabrics, which it may bleach. A cleanser is one step, so check with a dermatologist about persistent acne.

What is the best La Roche-Posay face wash? There is no single best one. The brand calls Toleriane Hydrating Gentle its best-selling face wash and says it is a daily cleanser for normal to dry, sensitive skin. For oily skin it suggests Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Wash or the Effaclar Gel.

How I would pick between the two lines

I think the honest way to choose is by what your skin is doing this month. If it is dry, sensitive or easily annoyed, start with Toleriane. If you are managing breakouts, Effaclar's medicated formulas do an actual drug job, not a marketing one.

I would not mix the two lines' actives on the same night. Keep the Thermal Spring Water spray close for days when your face needs a minute, and let a moisturizer and sunscreen finish what the wash started. The knight had a spring. You have a bathroom sink, and it works nearly as well.

After the wash, I explained why you can use La Roche-Posay Double Repair Moisturizer at night as well as in the morning.
