Zimmermann

Zimmermann

Sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann founded their namesake label in Sydney in 1991, after Nicky began sewing garments in her parents' garage and selling them at Paddington Markets. The brand's breakthrough came when it put swimwear on the same runway as ready-to-wear at the inaugural Australian Fashion Week in 1996, a pairing that was unusual at the time and helped it build an international following.

Dresses

Dresses are where Zimmermann's original market-stall instincts are still easiest to spot, since Nicky was designing and selling directly to customers at Paddington Markets before any wholesale account existed. The prints and cutting that got a friend's attention at Australian Vogue decades ago set a template of femininity with a bit of edge that the label has kept refining ever since. This is still the category the house is best known for.

Tops and shirting

It was an embroidered western-collared shirt, worn by a friend working at Australian Vogue, that got Zimmermann its first major press coverage and a wave of wholesale orders back in the early 1990s. Shirting has quietly stayed part of the brand's identity since. The pieces here carry a similar mix of detail and wearability.

Skirts

Skirts round out the print-driven, feminine sensibility Nicky Zimmermann established from the label's earliest days at the Paddington Markets stall. Simone's contribution on the operational side let that creative point of view scale into a proper wholesale and retail business rather than staying a market-stand project. The category still reads as an extension of that original design language.

Trousers and shorts

Trousers and shorts show the more tailored side of a brand that is often shorthanded as just prints and swim, even though its runway ambitions have grown considerably since its 1996 Australian Fashion Week debut. The house has shown regularly at New York Fashion Week since 2013 and moved its runway calendar to Paris in 2022. This grid reflects that broader, more structured range.

Jackets and blazers

Outerwear is a newer strength for a label that built its name on dresses and swim, reflecting how far the collection has expanded since Zimmermann started showing internationally. It is a smaller category here, but a useful signal of how the house has grown beyond its market-stall origins. Worth a look if you only know the brand for prints.

More from the collection

The remaining pieces fill out how Zimmermann rounds out a wardrobe today, more than three decades after Nicky and Simone started the label in Sydney. The house is still majority family-founded in spirit even after Advent International's 2023 investment, with Nicky remaining Creative Director and Simone Chief Operating Officer. Useful for pulling a full look from the edit.

Our honest take

Zimmermann's from-a-market-stall-to-Paris-runway trajectory is genuinely unusual for an Australian label, and the prints and swim-meets-ready-to-wear instinct that built its early reputation still anchor the collection. The newer categories, tailoring and outerwear especially, are competent additions rather than the reason to shop this brand. Come for the dresses first.
