Color Wow, the Bottles Behind the Hype

Color Wow, the Bottles Behind the Hype

Color Wow beyond one spray, from Dream Coat and Money Masque to Root Coverup and Xtra Large Bombshell

Known for One Spray

Dream Coat came out in 2017 and was, for a few years, a quietly loved salon spray. Then the celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton posted a TikTok of himself dripping water onto freshly styled hair with a pipette, and the water rolled off like it was hitting a raincoat. The clip was watched more than nineteen million times, and a spray most people had never heard of became the one everyone was asking about.

What I like about the Color Wow story is that the viral moment was not the beginning. Gail Federici, who co-founded John Frieda and built Frizz-Ease there, launched Color Wow in 2013 with a root powder that took three years to get right. The test that convinced her was her sister going swimming on a trip to Florida and coming out with her grays still covered. That is the brand in one story: a real complaint, a long development and a very practical test.

So this is not an edit about one spray. The first grid is the whole anti-frizz family, from the original Dream Coat to a cream you can use on dry hair between washes. The second is the masks, the root touch-up and the volume products for fine or thinning hair.

If your hair is colored, curly or fine, there is something here for you, and probably something you did not know the brand made.

Dream Coat and Frizz

Here is the one thing to know about Dream Coat: heat is what switches it on. Spray it on damp hair, comb it through, then blow-dry. Skip the dryer and it will not do much. Do it properly and it seals the hair against humidity, and the brand says the effect lasts through three or four shampoos.

The original Dream Coat Supernatural spray, the anti-frizz treatment the brand is known for, is for most hair types. The Extra Strength version is for thick, frizzy, curly or coily hair that you want to wear smooth, and it is designed to stop hair reverting when the air turns damp. If you would rather keep your curls, Dream Coat for Curly Hair is a different product altogether, a lightweight curl styler that gives definition and gloss without crunch. The set pairs the original spray with a mini Style on Steroids texture spray, a nice way to try both.

For the days between washes, One Minute Transformation is a cream for dry hair that smooths frizz on the spot, made with avocado oil. Money Mist is the leave-in conditioner, a light mist for gloss on any hair type. Extra Mist-ical is a lightweight shine spray that dries without grease, and the Cult Favorite hairspray gives a flexible, brushable hold that will not yellow or cloud color, with UV protection.

A good order for a humid day: Money Mist, Dream Coat, blow-dry, then a light mist of shine.

What I would skip: Dream Coat on a day you plan to air-dry. Save it for blow-dry days.

Masks, Roots and Volume

This is the side of Color Wow that does not go viral, and it is the side I would miss most.

Root Coverup first, because it is where the brand started. It is a root touch-up powder of reflective pigments that you brush onto grays or dark roots between color appointments, and it is water-resistant, so it stays put until you shampoo. It is also clever along a wide part or a thinning hairline, where a little shade makes hair look fuller. Here is a test I like: apply it in daylight, then check it again under your bathroom light. If it disappears in both, you have the right shade.

For treatments, Money Masque is the weightless one, a deep conditioner built on marine actives like blue sea kale, good for fine hair that hates heavy masks. Dreaming is for hair that has gone fluffy and damaged, with coconut and rice bran oils and squalane to smooth the cuticle, plus heat protection up to 380°F. The Coconut-Infused Dream Cocktail is a leave-in for dry, straw-like ends that activates with the blow-dryer.

For fine or thinning hair, Xtra Large Bombshell is a volumizing foam that adds volume and body without roughing up the cuticle, and Youth Juice is a collagen scalp serum aimed at the follicles themselves. Curls get two: FLO-ETRY, a serum of jojoba, coconut and pequi oils that stands in for the natural oils curly hair lacks, and SHOOK, a two-phase spray that bundles curls without a crunchy cast.

What I would skip: root powder on oily, day-three roots. Apply it to clean, dry hair so it grips.

If You Buy One

If I could only keep one Color Wow product, it would still be Dream Coat, and I say that as someone who is suspicious of anything that goes viral. It earns the attention for one simple reason: it does what the video shows, as long as you use heat.

But I would not stop there if you color your hair. Root Coverup is the product that quietly stretches the time between appointments, and it is the one the whole brand grew out of. Start with the spray, give it a humid week, and let your hair tell you what it wants next.
