Cropped Jackets Now

Jackets are stopping at the waist again. The shrunken cut changes how everything under it reads. Here is the range, from denim to cashmere.

Cropped and boxy jackets

The boxy crop is the base version. Reformation's Jori in denim and Tibi's shell jacket end at the natural waist with room across the back, and Khaite's Franc and the Gucci wool crepe do the same in tailoring cloth. Burberry's Haltye is the outlier, a trench compressed into jacket length.

Shell and wool crops

The Tibi shell jacket is the technical one, light enough to fold into a bag. The Another Tomorrow virgin wool crop has real weight and works as an outer layer on its own.

A cropped trench and a crepe jacket

The Burberry Haltye keeps every trench detail and then cuts the length at the waist. The Khaite Franc in crepe is smoother and reads closer to tailoring.

Shell and wool crepe, cropped

The Rick Owens Secchia has the sharper shoulder and a longer sleeve than the hem suggests. The Gucci wool crepe is more conventional and easier to wear to work.

Cropped leather and suede jackets

Leather is where the cut gets serious. Alaia's suede biker and Khaite's Cordan are short enough to sit above a high rise waistband, while Chloe, Saint Laurent and Veronica Beard go softer in suede. Givenchy and Citizens of Humanity keep the leather plain so the length does the talking.

Embossed leather and suede

The Gucci bomber uses embossing, so the logo reads as texture. The Chloe suede crop is softer in the hand and moves more when you walk.

Belted suede and plain leather

The Saint Laurent belted suede gives you a waist without a seam. The Khaite Cordan is the straight leather crop, which sits flat over a knit.

Two ways to do a cropped biker

The Givenchy leather crop keeps the hardware minimal. The Alaia suede biker keeps the zips and the collar but softens the whole thing by changing the material.

Cropped knits and boleros

Knitwear took the same idea and made it wearable on a Tuesday. Le Kasha's Chypre, Loulou de Saison's Jonah and Khaite's Masie are cropped cashmere with nothing else going on, and the Guest in Residence western cardigan and Reformation's Caspia open at the front. La Ligne's striped Mini Marina reads youngest of the set.

Cropped cardigans in cotton

The L'Agence Patsy is the plain one, which is why it goes with everything in the grid above. The La Ligne Mini Marina adds the stripe and a shorter body.

Cashmere crops with detail

The Guest in Residence western cardigan puts the interest at the yoke. The Le Kasha Chypre is undecorated and relies on the cashmere itself.

A cropped turtleneck and a crew

The Loulou de Saison Jonah covers the neck, which balances a very short body. The Khaite Masie leaves it open and sits closer to the shoulder.

Our honest take

If you take one thing away, it is that a cropped jacket only works when the thing underneath is high. Pair any of these with a mid rise trouser and you get an awkward strip of shirt in the middle, which is the single reason people decide the trend is not for them. Everything in this edit stops at or above the natural waist, so plan the bottom half first. Leather and suede hold the shape on their own and need no help. The knits will follow your body, which is good if you want softness and bad if you wanted structure. Denim sits between the two. Start with the version in a fabric you already wear, because the length is the new part and that is enough to adjust to at once.
