Dior Addict Shine Lipstick: The Shades I Would Wear

Dior Addict Shine Lipstick: The Shades I Would Wear

The Dior Addict Shine Lipstick brings back a shiny, upside-down-tube lipstick from the early 2000s, now refillable. Here are the shades I would pick, the Rouge Dior formulas beside it, and glossy lipsticks from other houses.

Dior Addict lipstick was one of the early 2000s lipsticks people still talk about, known for its upside-down tube and high shine. In 2022 Dior brought it back with a new formula made with 90 percent natural-origin ingredients, a refillable case, and a brick red called Dior 8, named for Christian Dior's lucky number. That is the story behind the Dior Addict Shine Lipstick, and it explains why it feels like a fashion accessory as much as a dior lipstick.

The formula is what keeps me reaching for it. Jasmine wax and plum oil sit with vegetable-based oils, and Dior says you get up to 24 hours of hydration and up to six hours of color and shine. I like to start with the softer shades. 426 Dior Rodeo is a rosewood nude, 871 D-Dream is an intense pink nude, and 521 Diorelita is a brown pink that suits a lot of skin tones. For more color, 786 D-Player is an intense rosewood and 558 Bois de Rose leans magenta-rosewood. The reds go from 524 Diorette, a peachy red, to 727 Dior Tulle, a brown red, and 862 Dio(r)evolution, an intense browish red.

A simple test: swipe one coat on bare lips and look at it in daylight. If it reads too strong, blot with a tissue and press on a second thin coat. Dior suggests two coats for the full effect.

Big numbers collage titled ADDICT SHINE, six products numbered one to six with each product set beside its number: Dior Addict Shine Lipstick in 558 Bois de Rose, Dior Addict Shine Lipstick in 524 Diorette, Dior Addict Shine Lipstick in 871 D-Dream, Dior Addict Shine Lipstick in 426 Dior Rodeo, Rouge Dior Lipstick in 818 Beloved and Gucci Glow & Care Shine Lipstick in Rosso Ancora

Rouge Dior and the rest of the lipstick wardrobe

Rouge Dior is the other side of the Dior lipstick wardrobe. It is refillable too, and the lip care is built around red peony and pomegranate flower extracts. 818 Beloved is a deep brownish red, 219 Rose Montaigne is a peachy nude, and 500 Nude Soul is a dark brownish nude. It comes in satin and matte finishes, and I would pick the satin if I wanted the shine of Addict with a little more polish.

Rouge Dior On Stage is a different shape entirely. The bullet is designed to work like a lip liner and lipstick in one swipe. 168 Copper Attraction is an orangey beige nude with a shine finish, and 222 Confident Nude is an intense beige nude. 380 Nude Ultra is the matte version, a pinkish brown nude with a 24-hour transfer-proof formula.

Then the liquids. Rouge Dior On Stage Ink Blur in 122 Captivating Rose is a soft pink blur matte that builds in intensity. Rouge Dior Forever Liquid in 999 Forever Dior is the classic Dior red, transfer-proof, with up to 12 hours of wear and no settling into lip lines.

Pairing tip: wear a satin Rouge Dior shade in the center of the lips and pat a shine lipstick over the top for a two-finish mouth.

What I would skip: the matte liquids on very dry lips without a balm first. Matte formulas sit better on smooth lips.

Shiny, balmy lipsticks from other houses

Shine lipsticks are not only a Dior idea, and these are the ones I would put next to it. Gucci Glow & Care Shine Lipstick in 509 Rosso Ancora is a red with black rose, peony and jojoba oils plus shea butter, and it delivers 24-hour hydration and a luminous shine. YSL Loveshine Lip Oil Stick in 201 Rosewood Blush is a soft rosewood in an oil stick, with six nourishing oils and fig pulp, and it builds from a bitten-lip sheer to full color.

For the softer, balmier end, Kosas Wet Stick in Baby Rose is a neutral light pink with squalane and ceramides. NARS Afterglow Sensual Shine Hydrating Lipstick in Devotion 208 is a mauve rose with shea and mango butter. Glossier Ultralip in Lucite is a soft peony pink with the sheen of a gloss. Marc Jacobs Heart On in 100 Blow Stick is a warm fair beige with cherry oil and a soft, dewy shine. Sisley Phyto-Rouge Shine in 10 Sheer Nude is ethereal and sheer, and it can be layered for a bolder look. Chanel Rouge Coco Flash in 56 Moment promises hydrating, vibrant shine in its name, and that is all I will claim for it here.

How to use them: swipe once for a hint of tint and build up only where you want more color.

What I would skip: layering two balmy sticks at once. They blur into each other and lose the color you chose.

Choosing your Dior Addict shade

Pick the shade by how much color you want to see. For a shine that reads as your lips but better, 426 Dior Rodeo, 871 D-Dream or 521 Diorelita. For a stronger mouth, 786 D-Player or 558 Bois de Rose. For a red, 524 Diorette is the warm one and 727 Dior Tulle is the deep one. If you prefer a more finished satin or matte, look to Rouge Dior, and for a sheer, comfortable stick, choose one of the balmier lipsticks from the last grid. Refillable cases mean you can keep one and swap the bullet, which is how I like to shop.
