Ladylike Dressing Without the Rules

Ladylike Dressing Without the Rules

Ladylike dressing is back, but this time it comes with flat sandals, jeans and a lot less stiffness. New designers at Chanel, Dior and Celine have all revisited the idea, pairing tweed with flip-flops and satin trousers with sweatshirts. These four outfits bring that mix of polish and ease to everyday clothes.

The Lady, Loosened Up

Tweed jackets, pearls and satin are all back, but the way to wear them now is with something casual. Start with one of the classic pieces and dress it down. Valentino's red tweed jacket, Jennifer Behr's black silk-satin pearl choker, Dries Van Noten's purple jacquard satin trousers and Liffner's large brown suede shoulder bag are good places to begin.

Tweed, Dressed Down

A bouclé blazer with jeans and flat sandals is the clearest example of the new approach. Saint Laurent's green bouclé blazer over Agolde's white 90's Pinch Waist jeans and Bode's printed cotton T-shirt looks relaxed, and Birkenstock 1774's raffia Arizona sandals stand in for the flip-flop.

Satin Trousers, Casual Top

Satin trousers read as evening wear until you pair them with a casual knit. Dôen's off-white jacquard satin Lavona trousers and Citizens of Humanity's navy ribbed cardigan make the case, with Gianvito Rossi's camel suede Elle pumps and Déhanche's black embossed belt pulling it together.

Pearls and a Cardigan

Pearls look fresher against colour. Lizzie Fortunato's green silk and pearl necklace sits over Chloé's red embroidered cardigan, and Gabriela Hearst's camel ribbed silk Muir skirt and Maison Margiela's white patent Tabi ballerinas give it an odd, modern finish.

A Bigger Bag

The ladylike bag has grown. Toteme's black belted leather tote and Alaïa's satin Le Teckel top handle cover day and night, and Nour Hammour's chocolate Marchand trench and Tod's black logo-embossed loafers complete the uniform.

Our honest take

Ladylike dressing works best when one part of the outfit refuses to play along. If you take one thing away, let it be the mix: a tweed jacket with jeans, satin trousers with a cardigan, pearls with a bright knit. That contrast is what makes it look current rather than borrowed from a grandmother's closet. We would skip the full matching tweed suit with coordinated bag and shoes, which is hard to wear anywhere except a very formal lunch. Pearls are the easiest place to start if you already own some, and a structured bag is the piece that will get the most use.
