Mighty Patch Blue vs Red: Which Hero Patch for Which Stage

Mighty Patch Blue vs Red: Which Hero Patch for Which Stage

On Hero's boxes, red is Mighty Patch Original, the nighttime patch, and blue is Invisible+, the daytime one. Here is what each Mighty Patch is for, including Micropoint for early-stage blemishes, plus the other pimple patches, cleansers and spot treatments I would use around them.

The patch in Seoul

Between 2012 and 2014, Ju Rhyu was an American working for Samsung in Seoul, and she kept noticing something odd in the office: colleagues walking around with pimple patches on their faces, in public, without a flicker of embarrassment. She bought one at a pharmacy for her own breakout and, by her account, watched it shrink overnight. It was, she has said, better than the traditional white cream or pink cream. Then she went home and started a company.

That is the Hero Cosmetics story, and I love how unglamorous the start was. Rhyu founded the brand in 2017 with cofounders Dwight Lee and Andrew Lee, with one product and very little money, and she has said she contacted more than ten manufacturers before two replied. What she really changed was the framing. A patch was a bandage-aisle thing. She made it a beauty thing, something you wear on purpose, and the packaging, with its orange and blue and its promise of being your blemish hero, does half the persuading. Church & Dwight announced in September 2022 that it would acquire the brand.

The trick is to read the first grid as a choice of stage and place. Mighty Patch Original is the classic hydrocolloid patch for nights, and the brand says to leave it on six to eight hours. Invisible+ is the ultra-thin daytime one, and Surface is the larger cluster patch. Micropoint is for blemishes before they surface, and the brand says it uses salicylic acid and cica. Nose Pore and Chin are shaped for those spots.

Rescue Balm is the post-blemish recovery cream, and Mighty Shield is the invisible barrier for skin you are trying to leave alone.

Pimple patches from other brands

Start with the rule that makes every patch work better: put it on clean, dry skin, and leave it alone until it turns white or the hours are up. A patch over moisturizer slides off, and a patch you keep peeking under never gets a chance.

Hero pimple patches are the reference point, but the category has filled up. Starface Hydro-Star comes in Extra Small and in the Earth version, and the extra small ones are the ones I would choose for a chin where a bigger patch sticks out. Peace Out has two: the Salicylic Acid and Hydrocolloid Acne Day Invisible patch for daytime, and the 2% Salicylic Acid Early Stage Microneedle patch for a bump that has not come up yet.

COSRX's Acne Pimple Master Patch is the well-known Korean one, in the Original Care version. Murad's Deep Relief Liquid Pimple Patch, a salicylic acid liquid that dries down into a patch, and SKIN1004's Tea-Trica Spot Cover Patch are the more targeted, treatment-style options. And rhode's spotwear bubble is the one for anyone who wants the patch to look like an accessory.

A pairing I like: a plain hydrocolloid patch at night and a colourful one for the sofa, where nobody minds.

What I would skip: patches on a very sore, deep lump. Patches are for the surface, and if it hurts, it is a conversation for a dermatologist.

Clarifying cleansers for breakout prone skin

One habit worth borrowing: wash for a full minute, not ten seconds. A clarifying cleanser only has time to do its job if it sits on your skin, and a minute is the easiest time to count while you brush your teeth.

Dermalogica has two, Acne Clearing Skin Wash and the Clear Start Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash, and it is worth choosing just one of them. OLEHENRIKSEN's Daily D-Clog is the salicylic acid cleanser for pore congestion. CeraVe's Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser and philosophy's Clear Days Ahead Oil-Free Salicylic Acid cleanser are the two I would try first for everyday breakouts.

Caudalie's Vinopure Pore Purifying Gel Cleanser is the gentler gel, ALPYN uses glycolic acid for pores and blackheads, and COSRX's Red Rice Inositol Pore Clarifying Deep Cleanser is the one with a deep clean in its name.

A pairing I like: a clarifying cleanser at night, and a plain hydrating one in the morning. Your skin gets one active wash a day, not two.

What I would skip: an acid cleanser on skin that stings, flakes or is peeling from something else. Give it a break and let it settle.

Spot treatments for stubborn breakouts

Here is a test I like: choose one spot treatment and use it on the same type of spot, on the same night, for two weeks. That way you learn what it does, and not what your week did.

Sulfur is the classic here. banu and The Ordinary each make a 10% sulfur spot treatment, one as a treatment and one as a powder-to-cream concentrate, so it is a real choice of texture. The INKEY List uses succinic acid. Skinfix Acne+ combines 2% BHA with azelaic acid, and philosophy's Clear Days Ahead Fast-Acting spot treatment uses salicylic acid.

beplain's Matcha Catechin Intensive Care Cream is the soothing spot cream, BYOMA's Blemish Spot Paste is the one for a dab at bedtime, and CeraVe's Acne Control Gel is the easiest to find.

A habit that helps: treatment on the spot at night, a patch or nothing on top, and Rescue Balm from the first grid once the spot has gone. Hero says its Mighty Patch is drug-free, so I treat it as protection, not as a treatment.

What I would skip: stacking three spot treatments on the same spot before an event. That is how you end up with a red, dry mark that is worse than the pimple.

Mighty Patch, answered

What is the difference between Mighty Patch Original, Invisible+ and Surface? Hero says Original is its nighttime patch and comes in one size, Invisible+ is ultra thin with tapered edges for daytime, and Surface is best for cluster or large-area breakouts like the jawline, cheeks and forehead. Original is the red box, Invisible+ is the blue box and Surface is orange.

Which Mighty Patch is for early-stage blemishes? Micropoint, which Hero sells as Mighty Patch for Early-Stage Blemishes in a teal box. Hero says it targets emerging blemishes with 395 dissolving Micropoints and is formulated with salicylic acid and cica. For blind pimples with no visible head, Hero's own answer on Ulta points to Micropoint over Invisible+.

Are COSRX Master Patches more effective than Hero's Mighty Patch? I would not make that claim, and neither brand does. COSRX describes its Acne Pimple Master Patch as hydrocolloid patches that protect a troubled area while keeping skin humid, in 24 patches of three sizes. Hero describes Original as medical-grade hydrocolloid worn 6 to 8 hours.

What is Hero Cosmetics? Hero is a skin care brand co-founded in 2017 by Ju Rhyu, built around Mighty Patch, a hydrocolloid pimple patch. Hero says its goal is gentle products for blemish-prone skin.

Do Hero pimple patches have salicylic acid? Original is made of medical-grade hydrocolloid and Hero calls it drug-free. The Micropoint patch is the one Hero formulates with salicylic acid and cica.

How I would use them

I think Hero Cosmetics is at its best as a habit and not a rescue mission. Patches for the spots you can see, a good cleanser for the routine, and one spot treatment for the ones you cannot.

So start with Original for nights and Invisible+ for days, choose one cleanser, keep your hands away from the spot, and give it a week before you judge. If breakouts are painful or persistent, see a dermatologist, because Hero itself says that. Rhyu's colleagues wore theirs at their desks in Seoul. You can wear yours to the office, and say nothing about it, which was rather the point.

Patches work best on clean skin, and I wrote about how to use the CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser as the wash before them. I went deeper on a related idea in How to Use PanOxyl for Back Acne: Body Wash, Spray and Patches.
