I built this edit around winter outfits women can wear from a frosty walk to a long commute, with long wool coats, chunky knits, dark denim, puffers, and the details that make layering work. I keep the history close, from a wartime duffle coat to Levi Strauss & Co.'s first women's jeans, and build outfits around useful proportions.

Winter Outfits Women: 1945, Montgomery, and the Duffle Coat
A coat is only the beginning
Britain, 1945: Gloverall's account says the duffle coat was worn by both the Royal Navy and the British Army, and names Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery as the movement's instigator. That history is a useful start for winter outfits women actually wear: outerwear should solve a real cold-weather problem and still let the person inside move.
I think in layers, not one heroic coat. The outdoor layering guide describes the base layer as wicking sweat, the middle as retaining body heat, and the outer shell as blocking wind and rain. In a city outfit, that same logic means a coat should close over the knit you actually plan to wear, trousers should leave room for a warm sock, and your neck should not be left to negotiate with a bare wind.
The light-gray Lands' End Wool Wrap Long Coat makes the case for a long line without a rigid front, thanks to its lapels and tie belt. COS's brown double-faced coat has a quieter shape, while Fleurette's black Charlie is straight and tailored in Italian wool. The black maje coat adds gold double-breasted buttons and welt pockets; Marina Rinaldi's charcoal speckle option loosens the line with a tie waist and side slits. I can see gray and black for workdays, brown when I want the whole outfit to feel softer, and charcoal when I want a little more movement.
Lauren Ralph Lauren's camel longline coat has patch pockets and glossy buttons, while Quince's Italian-wool coat draws in at the waist. Abercrombie's floor-length brown wool coat gives the same silhouette a generous sweep. I would check shoulder and sleeve room over your chunkiest sweater, then see whether the belt still ties comfortably without pulling. If a coat only closes over a thin tee, it is not much of a winter first layer for your wardrobe.

Chunky knits for real layers
I judge a chunky knit by its supporting role: it should keep a coat from becoming a wrestling match. The outdoor layering guide gives me a useful division: an insulating middle layer retains body heat, and more efficient heat-trapping means more warmth. The styling corollary is room. A relaxed sweater should still slide under a sleeve and let a scarf sit without crowding your jaw.
I would start with the black Polo Ralph Lauren half-zip. Its tall collar can be the whole neck plan, and the black wool-cashmere cable makes it easy under camel or gray. Quince's charcoal organic-cotton cable cardigan is a softer open-front counterpoint, with faux-horn buttons. The ecru chunky mock neck keeps the shape simple, while Pilcro's neutral two-tone cables add pattern without a bright color.
Then there is Nili Lotan's ivory wool turtleneck, cropped and anchored by oversized cable panels, and Sézane's ocean-blue jumper, whose baby-alpaca yarn gives the color an easy focal point. The lilac-flecked Hatley cable and the marshmallow cotton V-neck with varsity stripes remind me that cable texture need not mean oatmeal, all the time. I would pair the blue jumper with dark trousers and keep the scarf close to one color, or let the striped V-neck do the talking under a plain coat.
Before choosing, I would put your usual coat over the knit and bend your elbows. If a sleeve pulls across the forearm or the collar piles up under the lapel, the silhouette deserves a second look. What I would skip: a stiff, tight cuff under a coat with a narrow sleeve, especially if you need room for gloves.

Warm trousers and dark denim
Cold-weather trousers earn their place by making the transition between a long coat and a boot feel deliberate. I would build from texture first: the dark-carob wide-leg corduroy has a ribbed surface and full length; the French-navy Colette corduroys trade in a tailored high-rise line. COS's dark-gray wool-blend trousers are the quieter choice, with an easy elastic waist and a long inseam.
Denim has a women's history worth remembering. Levi Strauss & Co.'s timeline says the company introduced its first blue jeans for women in 1934. Here I would reach for the washed-black Cheeky Jean when I want a straight ankle line, or the dark-wash Universal Thread wide leg for a more relaxed leg. Mavi's Soho is dark, nonstretch cotton with a high rise; Levi's Easy Dad makes a full-length dark wash feel roomy without losing the five-pocket language.
For the fit check, compare the hem break seated and standing with the boot you plan to wear. Corduroy should not bunch into the shaft, and denim should not hover awkwardly over a low boot. KUT's dark-cherry corduroy is a lively alternate if you want the trousers to carry color instead of asking the sweater to do it. I would skip a heavy, wide hem if it tangles with the boots already in your rotation.

Puffers and shearling jackets
Outerwear should be chosen by forecast and movement, not only by whether it zips. The Canadian War Museum notes that duffle coat toggles could be opened with mittens; that small design detail makes me think about a winter jacket as something you should be able to manage with cold hands, not a puzzle that needs bare fingers. For this set, I like the short black Quince Responsible Down Puffer when a long coat feels like too much, and the longer hot-fudge version when I want more coverage.
Soia & Kyo's black Ayleen adds an adjustable hood and drawcord waist, while Halfdays' blue-fog Claude is shorter, quilted, and uses PrimaLoft insulation. For plush texture, UGG's ink Frankie is faux shearling with snaps. The reversible Levi's jacket gives you birch and black sides, and the olive KUT from the Kloth zip jacket and cream Avec Les Filles crop add two more compact silhouettes.
Before settling on length, I would close a jacket over the chunkiest knit you own, reach forward, and lift your arms. That small check helps reveal whether the hem rides up or the shoulder restricts; check the hood drawcord too, especially if you want it to fit over a hat. What I would skip: a short puffer on a day when the commute means standing still outdoors for long stretches.

Boots, scarves and gloves
The last few inches are where winter outfit planning gets real: a boot shaft meets a hem, a scarf meets the collar, and gloves have to work with every fastening. The War Museum's notes on the duffle coat mention horn or wooden toggles that sailors could undo through mittens, a reminder I like for accessories: practicality is a design detail, not an afterthought.
Quince's saddle Italian-leather tall western boots have a 13.8-inch shaft; the sand UGG Ultra Mini is a completely different proportion, with genuine shearling lining. For rain, Blondo's black Shyna is waterproof with a block heel and ankle height. The bright red triangular wool-cashmere scarf adds a clear color break, while the charcoal brushed scarf makes a dark coat feel softer. The black UGGfluff packable scarf gives you a compact option when your bag is already full. Lauren Ralph Lauren's forest-green sheepskin gloves and Kessler's tobacco lambskin gloves bring a little color and touchscreen-compatible fingertips.
I would match boots to trouser hem first, then decide whether the scarf is doing warmth or color. Check the tall shaft against the widest trouser opening you plan to tuck, and make sure gloves sit under your coat cuff before relying on them for the walk. On especially cold days, I would keep the scarf long enough to close the gap at the neckline instead of tying it into a bulky knot.

The order I would get dressed
I would build this in order: coat first, then a knit that can slip beneath it, trousers with the right fall, and finally the boots, scarf, and gloves that meet the day's weather. If I were choosing one outfit to repeat, it would be the brown long coat over a black half-zip, dark straight denim, and a waterproof ankle boot, with the red scarf to make the palette feel awake.
That is what I take from the duffle coat story: clothes that start with a job can still acquire a life off duty. A good winter outfit does not need to look like a uniform, but it can borrow the useful parts: movement, warmth, and pockets you can reach with gloves on.
