A clarifying wash lifts the buildup that makes hair look heavy and flat, from styling products to hard water minerals. Here are the clarifying shampoos, scalp scrubs and pre-wash treatments to use once a week, plus clarifying skin care for congested pores.
Clarifying Shampoos, Scalp Scrubs and Skin Care That Clears Buildup

Helen Reavey spent 15 years as a fashion and celebrity hairstylist before she launched Act+Acre in January 2019, and the brand's point of view comes straight from the salon chair: start with the scalp. Reavey, who is originally from Ireland, created and patented a Cold Processed method with her husband, Colm, to make plant-based hair care. The Act + Acre Clarifying Hard Water Shampoo is where I would start any clarifying routine. It uses a coconut-based cleanser and is designed to remove and prevent buildup from products and hard water minerals without stripping.
Hard water gets blamed for a lot, and the research is mixed. A 2016 study found hair treated with hard water lost tensile strength, while a 2013 study found water hardness did not affect strength or elasticity. What everyone agrees on is buildup. When Olaplex launched No. 4C in June 2022, the brand said styling products, natural oils and minerals from water can leave hair heavy and greasy, and No. 4C is a weekly, color-safe clarifying shampoo.
The rest of this row handles different kinds of heavy. Living Proof Clarifying Detox removes heavy metals left by hard water, K18 PEPTIDE PREP says it removes 76% of copper, and OUAI Detox uses apple cider vinegar. Nécessaire The Detox Shampoo pairs apple cider vinegar with pine oil, Bumble and bumble Sunday is the weekly habit many stylists grew up on, and Oribe The Cleanse borrows exfoliants from skin care.
Use one of these once a week, then condition as usual.

Scalp scrubs and pre-wash treatments for a real reset
Clarifying shampoo cleans the hair. The scalp sometimes needs its own step, and this row is all pre-wash. RŌZ comes from the Los Angeles native and hairstylist Mara Roszak, who created the line in 2021 and told ELLE she wanted to avoid single-use plastic by using aluminum and glass. The RŌZ Salt Scalp Scrub mixes Himalayan and Bolivian salt crystals with AHAs, so you get physical and chemical exfoliation in one wash, and the brand's scent comes from Big Sur, where she got married, and Laurel Canyon, where she grew up.
Act+Acre appears twice here, which makes sense for a brand built on scalp care. The Cold Processed Scalp Detox is a once-a-week tonic with basil leaf, baobab and moringa oils, and the Clarifying Hard Water Scalp Treatment comes as four single packets. Mizani Wonder Crown lathers into a rich foam and is made for before shampooing or between protective styles. Vegamour Scalp Clarifying Treatment exfoliates gently while supporting a balanced microbiome. BondiBoost HG pairs lactic acid and apple cider vinegar in an aloe base, and the BondiBoost Detox Sea Salt Scrub is the grittier choice for a flaky scalp. Virtue Exfoliating Scalp Treatment is a whipped cream with rice beads and fruit enzymes.
How I use them: section dry hair, work the product into the scalp with your fingertips, leave it a few minutes, then shampoo.
What I would skip: a salt scrub on a scalp that is sore or freshly colored. Use the Vegamour treatment or the Act+Acre tonic that week instead.

Clarifying skin care for the face
The same word shows up in skin care, and it means the same thing: clear what is sitting in the pores without stripping. Le Prunier is my favorite story in this row. Jacqueline, Allison and Elaine Taylor grew up on their family's organic plum farm in Northern California, a farming legacy that goes back to their great-grandfather in 1916, and the sisters founded the brand in 2018. Plumtox is a creamy purple mask with plum-derived AHA, BHA and PHA acids. Tata Harper and her husband, Henry, built their brand on a 1,200-acre organic farm in Vermont, and the first products were ready in 2010 after years of development that began with her stepfather's cancer diagnosis. Her Clarifying Moisturizer uses barley extract, oat oil and willow bark for skin that breaks out but still needs moisture.
Dr. Barbara Sturm Clarifying Mask uses zinc and plant extracts for blemish-prone skin. Klur Supreme Seed is a whipped mousse mask for rough texture and clogged pores, and Biologique Recherche Crème Dermopurifiante is the French cream for oily, congested skin. Susanne Kaufmann Purifying Cleansing Gel is the mild daily wash. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque adds charcoal and clay, and Topicals Clearly Clarifying uses colloidal sulfur.
A pairing idea: do a clarifying mask on the same night as your scalp scrub and make it one reset night a week.
What I would skip: stacking the acid mask and the sulfur mask in one routine. One is plenty.

How often to clarify
Once a week is plenty for most hair. If you use dry shampoo, heavy stylers or swim often, go to twice, and if your hair is dry, curly or freshly colored, stretch it to every other week and choose a color-safe formula like Olaplex No. 4C or K18. Always follow a clarifying wash with conditioner, since it leaves hair very clean. For the scalp, one pre-wash treatment a week is enough, and for your face, one clarifying mask. Clean hair should feel light and move when you shake your head, and that is the sign to stop and go back to your regular shampoo.
