90s Fashion

Nineties fashion for women has been recycled so thoroughly that the references are now first hand for nobody under thirty. What actually came back is specific: the slip dress, the baby tee, the cargo, the low rise. This edit is those pieces as they exist now, which is to say with better fabric and a less punishing rise.

Slip dresses

The slip dress is the piece that never fully left, it just got shorter and then longer again. Bias cut satin over a tee is still the most nineties way to wear one. These are the slips in the mix now.

Baby tees and tanks

The baby tee is doing the heavy lifting in every nineties reference right now, usually with a shrunken fit and a ringer trim. Tanks and tube tops are the same idea with less sleeve. These are the tops that read the decade fastest.

Cargo, parachute and low rise

Cargo and parachute pants are back with a wider leg and more pockets than anyone needs. Low rise came with them, though the current version sits kinder than the original. These are the trousers doing it.

Our honest take

One nineties piece per outfit is the difference between a reference and a costume. Start with the slip dress or the baby tee, since both go with what you already own.
